O THE é usado quando tem uma ideia definida (caso do universal derision) ou referência anafórica. Além disso, você usa ele quando tem adjetivos no grau superlativo (caso do greatest) ou substantivados. O uso também vale para números ordinais ou períodos históricos (caso do 20th Century).
