acredito que o 'it'' esta se referindo aos objetos. ''and to a lot of it, the toothbrush, finished in first place ''' traduzindo fiacaria algo assim ''e na maior parte/em grande dos objetos a escova de dente ganhava em primeiro. ... note que ate no titulo da para tirar que ele esta se referindo aos objeto ''we could not live without it(os objetos).
posso esta errado mas fica meio estranho substituir people's surprise por it pois muda o sentido da frase.
