Olá Fibonacci13( LOL),

Na frase "Liars ought to have good memories", nos quer dizer que: Os mentirosos devem ter boas memórias. Pelo que podemos entender, é uma obrigação eles terem uma boa memoria, pois senão eles não conseguem sustentar essa mentira.

Repare no trecho: "when someone is married against their will and cannot leave.

"Cannot leave" da a ideia de obrigação, ou seja, mesmo contra a vontade deles, eles não podem fazer tal coisa. Must é um modal verb que expressa...
