Alternativa d). Mas por que não poderia ser a alternativa a) ?

A forma que o texto está tentando expressar não é de comparação entre duas coisas no sentido habitual, mas, sim, de proporcionalidade entre as mesmas.

É como se fosse:

"Quando mais isso, mais aquilo";
Em inglês: "The larger the airline is, the higher pilots’ salary is".

A alternativa a) não faria sentido porque não estamos falando que o avião é, necessariamente, o maior num conjunto (the largest), e sim expressando que, quando maior o avião, maior o salário do piloto.
